Website content may refer to the content on any page of your website. From your homepage and service pages to your blogs, all these pages include website content. It’s not just about your blogs.

Most websites have all of these pages with content on them, but not all websites have a network of content. So, what do we mean by a network of content and why should you create one? Find the answers below.

First, the SEO benefits of website content

Your website content is heavily influential to your website’s Search Engine Optimisation (SEO). Search engines like Google will rank website pages in higher positions if the page includes well-crafted content that is judged to be informative and relevant. Updating content frequently will also help with the page’s SEO ranking. By having higher-ranked pages, you will get more website visitors and generate more leads for your business.

To create content that will score better with the folks at Google, you may need to complete SEO keyword research and outsource the content creation to an SEO copywriter. These are things we can help with at WEBPRO if needed. Just get in touch for a free quote!

What is a network of content?

A network of content is when the content on a website is:

  1. Interlinked
  2. Structured
  3. Purposeful

These three things also work together. For example, linking the content from individual pages should follow a structure that has been purposefully considered. There are ways to get it right and get it wrong.

We’ll be providing some insights below…

Key considerations when linking

Internal links between website pages will score SEO points. However, it isn’t just about including as many links as possible on any page. Your internal links need to provide real value to the website visitor by helping them navigate the site for the information they’re looking for.

On each page, you should consider the next action the visitor may want to take, as well as consider how you’re more likely to make a sale. Most leads leave a website out of frustration that they cannot get the information they need easily, so navigational considerations are essential.

For example, linking from one service page to a completely unrelated service page isn’t ideal. It’s more likely to benefit the user if you link from a service page to a contact page for a free quote, or to one of your blogs on a subject that is relevant to that service.

Creating a hierarchy of content

One of the latest developments in SEO content creation is structuring content so that it has a hierarchy. This technique is now considered best practice as it not only provides a lot of content which adds value to the user, it is also organised in such a way that it can be navigated and digested easily. Remember, Google is all about the user experience!

It was normal for websites to have a range of service pages and then simply upload regular blogs which were sometimes categorised to cover different topics or services. However, new hierarchies are cleverly being applied to website content that heavily consider the purpose of the content. This is best explained with an example.

Let’s imagine you run a financial services business and offer a wide range of services. One of your services may be mortgage advice so you wish to create content discussing mortgage options and answering common questions. To do this with a content hierarchy you might:

  1. Have a main service page on the different types of mortgages, including the mortgage advice services you offer
  2. Have supporting service pages that go into each type of mortgage in more detail
  3. Have long-form guides discussing each type of mortgage individually and how they work. For example, “What is an Offset Mortgage?”
  4. Have several blogs all answering common questions about one type of mortgage. For example, “Which banks offer Offset Mortgages in the UK?”
  5. Have case studies which talk about how you have helped individual clients with each of the services you offer

Each of these content types link together, supporting the main service page at the centre and creating a network of content. This approach feeds Google’s need for internal links, content and user experience and it also gives potential clients the opportunity to build trust in you as a business and see that you have the skills and experience required to do the job.

Recap: A network of content is when a website has interlinked pages with a purposeful structure, preferably with a hierarchical order. This can have massive benefits to your SEO performance and make it easy to plan future content.
